Cooling Vests & Heat Stress Workwear

When site temperatures climb, heat stress stops being a comfort problem and becomes a safety risk. Cooling workwear tackles it directly: evaporative vests that lower body temperature for hours, wide brim hats and neck shades that keep the sun off, and vented headwear that lets heat escape, most of it activated in minutes with nothing more than water.

Evaporative cooling that lasts

Soak, wring and wear. Cooling vests use fibres made specifically for body cooling, chilling the wearer for hours as water evaporates, and they re-cool in minutes at the nearest tap without wetting the clothes underneath.

Stay seen while staying cool

The hi-vis cooling vest brings body cooling to roadside and site work where high visibility kit is the norm, and the rest of the cooling range layers cleanly with the hi-vis clothing your crew already wears.

Head and neck covered

Beyond vests there are cooling wide brim hats, caps, head bands, neck scarves and a helmet neck shade that fits to a safety helmet, protecting the areas where sun exposure hits hardest. 11 cooling lines are available now.

About heat stress and cooling PPE

There is no maximum legal workplace temperature in the UK, but employers still carry a clear duty. Under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations, the risk of heat stress must be assessed and controlled like any other hazard, and HSE guidance on heat stress lists modified clothing among the practical controls. With UKHSA heat-health alerts now arriving most summers, outdoor trades feel it first. Heat stress shows up as fatigue, dizziness, cramps and loss of concentration, and on a live site a lapse in concentration is an accident risk in its own right.

Evaporative cooling kit works with the body rather than against it. A cooling vest is soaked in water, wrung out and worn over or under the work layer, where evaporation draws heat away steadily for hours before a quick re-soak brings it back to full effect. The evaporative vest design keeps the clothes underneath dry, the standard cooling vest is cut to clear the waist so it stays comfortable when sitting or bending, and the hi-vis version does the same job where visibility matters. Around the head and neck, a cooling wide brim hat or cap shades and cools in one, a helmet neck shade adds sun protection without replacing the safety helmet the job requires, and a vented bump cap keeps airflow moving where low-level head protection is needed.

Cooling kit works best alongside sensible summer workwear choices: lighter fabrics, breathable layers and planned breaks in shade. Browse the full Portwest catalogue on the products page, or read how workwear certifications fit together in our safety standards guide.
