Safety Helmets and Hard Hats
A hard hat is the last line of defence against falling objects, swinging loads and knocks against fixed plant, so the shell, the harness inside it and the way it fits all matter. Our Portwest head protection range covers industrial safety helmets to EN 397, lightweight height helmets with a chin strap for working at height, and vented and electrically insulated options, so you can match the helmet to the hazard rather than settle for one shell for every job.
Industrial safety helmets certified to EN 397 for shock absorption, penetration resistance and flame retardance, the core standard for construction, warehousing and general site head protection.
Height helmets with a secure chin strap that stays on during a fall, plus vented shells that let air move around the head for comfort on warm or physical jobs.
Slip ratchet and wheel ratchet harnesses adjust to head size for a stable, comfortable fit, with accessory slots for ear defenders, visors and chin straps.
18 safety helmet lines available. Free UK delivery on orders over £75.

About safety helmets and hard hats
Industrial safety helmets are certified to EN 397, which sets the baseline requirements every hard hat must meet: shock absorption from a falling mass, resistance to penetration by a sharp object, and flame retardance, along with anchorage points for a chin strap. EN 397 also defines optional performance marks that you choose by the hazard, including very low temperature down to minus 30 degrees C, very high temperature up to 150 degrees C, lateral deformation for crush risks, molten metal splash, and electrical insulation to 440 volts a.c. Check the shell marking against the job rather than assuming every helmet carries every option.
Pick the helmet by the work. For general site, construction and warehousing, an EN 397 helmet with a slip or wheel ratchet harness is the standard choice. For working at height or in confined spaces where a helmet must not fall off, choose a height helmet with a four point chin strap that holds the shell in place. For live electrical work, an electrically insulating helmet to EN 50365 protects against contact up to 1000 volts a.c. Vented shells add airflow for comfort but are not suitable where electrical or molten metal protection is needed, so match the ventilation to the risk.
Browse the full range on the products page, or read how the head protection standards fit together on our safety standards guide. A safety helmet has a limited service life and a moulded expiry date, and the shell should be replaced after any significant impact even if no damage is visible, so check the date stamp and keep the harness clean and correctly adjusted.
